OOTD_91 "Cactus in the valley"

DSC_0917 I've recently found that I'm having trouble making my outfits interesting and have depth as the days get warmer because I'm not able to layer as much as I'd like. The perfect solution to this problem is a vest. The cut of it still leaves you cool, but you've added some dimension to your outfit as well. I have 4 vests in my closet (3 of them DIYed!) that I think will be getting a lot of wear in the coming months.

The track for today's outfit post is "Cactus in the valley" by Lights, whose music I have featured on here before in this outfit post. Listen along here while you view!

DIY_Camo Vest with Leather Studded Trim

intro So in the process of searching for the perfect camo jacket, I ended up buying two and not liking the fit of the first one I purchased from Amazon. Instead of returning it, I decided to transform it into a vest with a better fit and also added some cool details. I hope you enjoy this tutorial!

If you're not interested in making this piece, I'm actually selling this vest on my Etsy shop! You can check it out here. (ED: This item is now sold).

Here's the jacket that I started with.

I started by cutting off the sleeves.

I then make another set of cuts to make the sleeves more flattering. Start a couple inches in from the edge of the sleeve, and curve the cut down to the existing bottom of the sleeve.

I then cut off the bottom for a cuter fit.

I cut a piece of faux leather to fit the size of one pocket flap and attached it to the vest with tacky glue. You can find this kind of material and your typical fabric store. It is the same fabric that I used for my DIY Leather + Vinyl Clutch tutorial.

I then just added 5 silver pyramid studs to finish off the look. You can see my tips for adding studs to clothing, here.

And here's the finished product! Good luck with your own projects, or buy it on my Etsy here. (ED: The item is now sold).
